A full private water supply installation is made up from various components including submersible pumps, headworks, control systems and in some cases, depending on the requirements – water storage tanks.

Water storage tanks are often used if the borehole or spring water supply doesn’t yield enough water on demand or the borehole needs chance to catch up after a heavy period of use. This is particularly useful for golf courses and holiday parks that have large water requirements at set times of the day.

What are the benefits of a Water Storage Tank?

We recommend the use of water storage tanks where your demand for water is potentially greater than the borehole or spring yield and, and in terms of spring supplies they are ideal for drought protection.

They also prove extremely useful for business or farmers that rely heavily on water and may not have access to a mains supply meaning that should their submersible pump breakdown, they could be immediately without water having huge implications for the business.

A water storage tanks means water is held in reserve meaning a farmer or factory could continue to use their water despite the pump being out of action. This buys them more time to isolate the problem and get it fixed.

As well as buying a business time should they run into problems, a tank also reduces stress on the borehole by not having it operating constantly giving the user more control over their private water supply.

Warning lights and alarms can also be fitted to the storage tanks assisting the user to ensure that any potential problems are dealt with before they are out of water.

Water Storage Tank Key Considerations

The considerations required when fitting water storage tanks all depends on the intended use of the water – be it drinking, agricultural or industrial the requirements are different.

Typically you need to:

  • Make sure the water tank is not too large, so the water in the tank is frequently replenished with fresh water.
  • Make sure the tank is made of approved materials (these are published by the Water Regulations Advisory Scheme) and ensure it is the appropriate colour for its intended use.
  • Fitted with a lid which excludes light and is tightly fitting and securely fastened, so that birds, vermin, and dust cannot get in to the water.
  • Have the tank annually inspected and any deposits cleaned out and the tank disinfected annually.
  • Protect the tanks from frost

Booster Set & Tank

Water storage tanks come in a variety of shapes, sizes, materials and can be built in sections for construction in tight spaces. It is also possible to install them below ground for those circumstances where an above ground water storage tank isn’t a possibility.
