An abstraction licence in England and Wales is a licence to abstract a controlled water (surface water or groundwater) where you plan to abstract more than 20m3/day (4,400 gallons). Where you plan to abstract less than 20m3/day no abstraction licence is required and no application has to be made to the Environment Agency.

In Scotland the situation slightly different and you can have a ‘General Binding Rule’ where abstraction is less than 10m3/day (low risk) – no application is required, a ‘Registration’ (moderate risk) where abstraction is between 10m3 and 50m3 but does not incur an annual subsistence charge, an ‘Abstraction Licence’ (higher risk) for abstractions of more than 50m3/day and an application charge will apply, and the activity may also be subject to an annual subsistence charge.

In any area of the country requirements for authorisations and licenses are aimed at larger water users to ensure that control is in place so not more water is abstracted than is required and the water environment is managed appropriately both for use and the environment.

Here at Dales Water we take a holistic view of new contracts and if required are in place to take care of a new licence application either in England and Wales or Scotland to ensure that your new borehole abstraction is fully compliant with the relevant laws. However, we are also available to help you gain you your abstraction licence whatever your situation, where you have an existing borehole water supply and are planning to increase the amount of water you abstract requiring a new abstraction licence, are looking to vary an abstraction licence to change some of the conditions on your licence or renew a licence which is approaching expiry. Given the current drought situation many of our clients are finding our expertise and help invaluable to ensuring they get the abstraction licence that they require.

Drought conditions are now being reported in all but the most northerly and westerly of counties of England the BBC are reporting. Their most recent article on the drought situation, what a drought is and what the consequences are, can be seen here.

The consequences of drought can indeed be very dire on both the environment and on the economy in terms of farming and heavy industry that often rely on a sustainable water source even in drought conditions.

Here at Dales Water we are experiencing a stream of borehole enquiries as a result.

We have reported in recent weeks on the drought situation within our news section of our website and on the likely impacts that could be felt – these are now beginning to be realised and the Environment Agency are reporting that ‘the drought may last until Christmas’ so there is certainly no sign of the situation getting better in the short term.

We are receiving so many enquiries for borehole water supplies because properly constructed boreholes, like ours, can draw historical water, in some cases several thousand years old that has been replenished by rainfall over decades and millennia. Therefore, during periods of drought they are sustainable, drawing as they do, from their vast underground resources in the form of aquifers. Our borehole drilling schedule is very full but we can accommodate new enquiries and contracts into our schedule to help ensure that you remain unaffected by drought conditions whether it be for agricultural and spray purposes, industrial systems, domestic supplies or in using groundwater to top up low flow conditions in surface water features like streams and lakes.

Contact us to discuss your particular circumstances and discuss how it is possible to beat the drought conditions.

The decision to go onto a private water supply, either a spring or borehole is either a financially led, a water pressure led decision or because mains water simply isn’t available. In the former case the decision to investigate a private water supply is so that it saves you money. We are quite often asked therefore what the ongoing cost of borehole water is as opposed to mains water.

It’s a difficult question for us to answer, but we certainly know its a lot cheaper! There are a lot of site specific information and variables that affect the answer, such as which mains water provider serves you, if you require water treatment on your borehole water, if you are on single or three phase power supply etc. However, we have done some research in to the ongoing costs of borehole water per meter cubed as opposed to mains water per meter cubed.

Typically and approximately mains water costs anywhere between £1.20 and £1.40 per meter cubed (220 gallons) and mains water costs are always rising! See our prevous blog post on rising mains water costs here. Typically and approximately post initial cost for construction of your private water supply you can expect to pay between £0.10 and £0.30, and in some cases less, per meter cubed (220 gallons) for your borehole water. That’s a huge saving! If you’re a big water user it makes so much sense to save the money and you can quickly get your initial outlay costs for borehole drilling and construction back.

That includes us here in the UK and Groundwater forms a fundamental part of the water supply here in the UK and all over the world; see some of our previous new items for further information. Groundwater is one of the most important resources that we have, to be protected, used and managed for us and future generations. It can also help across the world to quench the ‘Thirst’ that the UN refer to and assist in economics and stimulate growth.

Here at Dales Water groundwater, borehole water supplies, spring water supplies, water treatment and overall private water supplies are our business but we recognise the importance of groundwater throughout the world. Take a look at the World Water Day website it’s full of interesting facts and information about the event, how important water is and the need for clean water throughout the world.

During the spring and summer we all know we get less rainfall (we’ll other than when we get typical British Summers!!) Consequently water becomes scarcer and the groundwater table becomes lower. We are all currently being told in the press that we are suffering from a drought and that it is to continue throughout this year.

In your borehole this means that the rest and pumping water level will also be lower. In some extreme instances poorly constructed (not by us) and not deep enough drilled boreholes (again not by us) can dry up. It’s an important consideration to think about with your borehole as typically the summer months are when you need the water the most. To help this we can attend site and blow your borehole out with a high volume compressor or deepen your borehole with one of our drilling rigs.

Blowing your borehole air flushes the borehole resulting in increased water entering the borehole especially in instances where perforated casing has become sedimented up with iron other determinants that are present in the water. Drilling deeper assists in taping into more water bearing rock and increasing the volume of water available.

If you would like to discuss your borehole and how to increase your water availability talk to us here at Dales Water and we’ll be happy to help…… tel: 01765 640 646.

This week is the US National Groundwater Awareness Week but we are promoting it here in the UK this week to and will be informing our customers and suppliers when they call and e-mail us.

Today on our news section, and in the last of our items associated to National Groundwater Awareness Week, we are considering the importance of a properly constructed boreholes and the effects on groundwater

When we drill a borehole to tap in to groundwater resources we give a lot of consideration to the likely availability of groundwater and the likely chemical characteristics of the water via our borehole prognosis. However, we also give a lot of consideration to how to properly construct the borehole and the associated infrastructure and the likely effect that that work will have on the groundwater. When drilling a borehole we recognise that the drilling works themselves will have an impact on the groundwater.

Initially as drilling progresses toward the groundwater table the groundwater will be suppressed as a result of the downward pressure being exereted by the drilling. Once a water strike has occurred and the water table has been intercepted we have exposed a controlled water and it is therefore important that all works from this point forward protect the water both for the sake of the proposed use, such as drinking water, but also to protect the environment. Any additives used need to be suitable and not potentially damaging. Sealants and materials used to construct the borehole have to be used appropriately to ensure that they do not contaminate the groundwater.

Post construction the borehole needs to have been constructed such that no contamintion can migrate down to the water table as the borehole forms a direct pathway to the groundwater.

This week is the US National Groundwater Awareness Week but we are promoting it here in the UK this week to and will be informing our customers and suppliers when they call and e-mail us.

Today on our news section of our website we are thinking about groundwater in water scarce areas of the world.

In the UK, like many areas of the world such as the US and large areas of Europe, we are lucky that we are, relatively speaking, water rich, even though we do suffer from the occasional drought. We also have access to excellent, modern, technology like our drilling rig. This means that we can tap into the large groundwater resources by sinking boreholes and maximising the groundwater available through modern efficient pumping systems.

However, many areas of the world are not as fortunate being both water scarce and lacking the technology to access difficult to find water. In these parts of the world groundwater forms an important resource and people will go to significant lengths to access it. We’ve recently watched an interesting video from the BBC about groundwater in the Algerian desert and this shows what an important resource groundwater is in water scarce parts of the world. You can watch the video here. Watching this video makes us appreciate the groundwater beneath our feet in the UK and the borehole drilling we can carry out to help people access it.
